Issac Watt put these words into the mouth of John Locke – maybe because Locke did not allow for truth comprehended apart from reason. Isaac Watt was not against reason. He was a logician who wrote an authoritative textbook on the subject. But Isaac Watt’s love of knowledge did not diminish his faith. If it had, our hymn books would be thinner.
